Shaker Inspired Chest of Drawers I am currently in the middle of building three chests of drawers like this one. This piece has its origins in Shaker design. Here are pictures of the first chest completed. There is a cove molding that goes between the base and the case. The drawer slides are manufactured by Blum and are 100 lb capacity, full extension, hidden slides (look up Tandem slides at Blum website). There are many things about traditional furniture that I admire. The functionality of traditional drawers is not one of those things. The technology for affordable, durable, full extension, hidden slides is here and had the shakers had it available to them, I feel certain that they would have taken advantage of it. The drawer bottoms are made of 1/2 inch thick plywood. The large drawers have two, 1/2 inch thick panels in the bottom supported by a center beam called a "muntin" to better support their contents. The back of the chest is 1/2 inch thick furniture grade plywood. Elliptical, Sectional Dining Table This table was built on commission for a customer in San Antonio. Her home is very beautiful. She brought me a picture from a magazine of a round table with a triple bead edge, a skirt with a bead molding and an inlay that had a burl contained between what looked like two thin black strips of black wood (the picture wasn't very clear). I worked very closely with the customer to define the elliptical proportions for this table. We were both pleased with the final results. Both power tools and hand tools were used to build this project. The table is made largely of walnut. The skirts are made of plywood and walnut covered with walnut veneer. The inlay is burl maple between strips of black dyed birch. |
