Salt Box

Salt boxes were originally used to store salt, candles or other edible items where the mice could not get to them.  Candles were made of tallow (animal fat) and were irresistible to mice.  The handsome proportions and simple moldings identify this box's shaker inspired origins.  This drawer was dovetailed by hand and carefully fitted to the case using a hand plane, marking gauge and chisels.  The finish is nitrocellulose lacquer over stained pine.

Because of all of the skill required to build this project, this class is the most challenging of the beginner classes.  Emphasis will be placed on:

bulletCutting to fit instead of measuring
bulletCase construction
bulletSimple door construction
bulletSimple drawer construction
bulletCreating simple moldings with a bench plane
bulletParing with a bench chisel and guide block
