Step Stool

This beautifully proportioned step stool is based on a shaker design published in the wonderful book Shop Drawings of Shaker Furniture and Woodenware, volume 2 by Ejner Handberg.  Ejner repaired many shaker pieces built originally by the shakers of Hancock, Massachusetts and New Lebanon, New York.  Note the shaker principles of regularity, harmony and order displayed in this piece.  Like most shaker furniture, it avoids the overuse of wood that would make it heavy or bulky.  Instead, the piece is light, strong and stable while at the same time beautiful in its simplicity.  The step stool is made of poplar and painted with slate blue milk paint and a clear coat of acrylic.

Although this step stool is simple in design, it takes almost every tool in the tool box to build it.  For this reason, it is a great project to practice all of your hand tool skills.  Note the dovetailed cross members and the bullnose molding in the second photo above.
